Last weekend we had a "bit" of Cambodia at home (well, to be honest, the "bit" is 6ft tall!) But let's start from the beginning, which is where all things should start from...
El fin de semana pasado tuvimos un "pedacito" de Camboya en casa (bueno, ¡el "pedacito" en realidad mide 1.80m!). Pero empecemos por el principio, que es por donde se deben empezar las cosas...

As of lately, every time we asked our friends Gareth and Yasmine what they were doing during the weekend, they replied "we are having a Russian over" or "a Chinese girl is visiting" or "we are going with a German guy to Lincoln..." So when we enquired which section of the UN they were running the answer was they had simply joined HOST UK. This is an organization which works with international students, who are studying at UK institutions, to give them a short visit in a British home. All of the host families are volunteers, we were told, and they host because they enjoy meeting people from other cultures and places. The visiting students are usually so focused in their studies they don't have time to experience the British way of life, or come from so far away that they can't afford to go home for holidays while they in the UK.
Ultimamente, cada vez que les preguntabamos a nuestros amigos Gareth y Yasmine que qué iban a hacer durante el finde, nos respondían "pues tenemos un ruso", o "nos visita una china", o "nos vamos con un alemán a Lincoln..." Total, que cuando les preguntamos que sucursal de las Naciones Unidas les pagaba comisión nos contestaron que no, que simplemente eran miembros de HOST UK. Se trata de una organización que trabaja con estudiantes internacionales en instituciones del Reino Unido, a los cuales proporcionan estacias cortas en casas de familias británicas. Todas estas familias "adoptivas", nos explicaron, son voluntarias, y acojen porque les gusta conocer gente de otras culturas y lugares. Normalmente, estos estudiantes extranjeros están tan imbuidos en sus estudios que no tienen tiempo de experimentar el modo de vida británico, o vienen de tan lejos que no se pueden permitir el volver a casa por vacaciones durante su estancia.
So when we asked "and won't they have a Cambodian student willing to spend a weekend with us?" Gareth set the wheels in motion and contacted Mandy and Mike, the regional officers for HOST UK. Mandy emailed us back saying they had never had a Cambodian... just to tell us two days later that they had received an application!!.
Pues bien, a la pregunta de "¿y no habrá un estudiante Camboyano que quiera pasar un finde con nosotros?" Gareth se puso manos a la obra para contactar a Mandy y Mike, los representantes regionales de HOST UK. Mandy nos mandó un email contándonos que nunca habían tenido a ningún Camboyano... para tan solo dos días despues confirmar que, casualidades del destino, ¡¡habían recibido una solicitud!!
As Elena says, "things happen for a reason", so we joined HOST UK straight away. Almost immediately we received an email from our guest-to-be, Im Sophea, whom we kept addressing for a while as "Dear Im!" or later "Hello Im" in our communications... until we found out that "Im" is his last name, which in Cambodia precedes the first name. From then on, he became Sophea (pronounced "So-Pee-a"). And hence the pun in this post's title (yes, we are sooo clever... and so funny!)
Como dice Elena, "las cosas pasan por algo", así que nos falto tiempo para apuntarnos a HOST UK como anfitriones. Casi de inmediato recibimos un email de nuestro futuro invitado, Im Sophea, al que durante buena parte de nuestra correspondencia posterior nos referíriamos como "Estimado Im", o, cuando había ya mas confianza, "¡Hola Im!". ¡Hasta que nos dimos cuenta de que "Im" es su apellido!, pues los asiáticos lo anteponen al nombre de pila. Desde entonces, pasó a ser Sophea (pronunciado "So-pía"). Y de ahí el juego de palabras del título de esta entrada (sí, es que somos super listos...¡y graciosos!)
In one of his emails, Sophea apologized for the delay in replying, but had been delayed because "[...] when the class was over, it was very cold and I was really excited to touch snow for the first time!"
En uno de sus emails, Sophea se disculpaba por no haber contestado antes, pero es que se había retrasado porque "[...] al salir de clase, hacía mucho frío y ¡me ha hecho mucha ilusión poder tocar la nieve por primera vez!"
In another message, he was a little concerned because "[...] I am not used to train travel in the evening" and while purchasing the tickets "[...] you know what, I was so shocked to see how much traffic there was at the station, busier than international airport... an amazing system!" (well, some of us living here would beg to differ...)
En otro de sus mensajes nos mostraba un poco de preocupación porque "[...] no estoy acostumbrado a viajar en tren de noche" y a la hora de sacar el billete "[...] estaba impresionado con la cantidad de moviento en la estación, mas que en aeropuerto internacional... ¡un sistema de transporte público alucinante!" (aunque alguno de los que vivimos aquí puede que no estemos del todo de acuerdo con esa afirmación...)
Shortly before his arrival, Sophea sent us a photo of him. Contrary to our expectations (how wrong can they be sometimes!) and as mentioned before, he is a strong 6ft tall guy ("[...] a bit taller than average Cambodian", he added shyly). When we sent him a link to our photo gallery at Picasa Web Album he was also surprised that we were his same age (babies of '72 & '73, what good years they were!)
Poco antes de llegar, Sophea nos mandó una foto suya. Contrario a lo que esperabamos (¡ay! las ideas preconcebidas, que equivocadas son a veces) y como ya hemos dicho antes, se trata de un tiarrón de 1.80m ("[...]algo mas alto de lo normal en Cambodia" nos insuinuó tímidamente). Cuando le mandamos un link a nuestra galería de fotos en Picasa Web Album él también se quedo sorprendido de que fueramos de su quinta (el 72/73, ¡que años tan buenos!)
So, all the visit's preliminaries were quickly agreed, the dates Sophea proposed suited us fine and, said and done, we arranged the visit for the weekend of the 15th of February. That evening, at the Scunthorpe train station, any doubts regarding issues recognizing each other were quickly dissipated upon realization that we were the only ones waiting at platform one, and that from the three people who got off the train only one looked Cambodian...
En fín, que todos los preparativos preliminares fueron sobre ruedas, las fechas que Sophea proponía eran las que nosotros podíamos, así que dicho y hecho, quedamos para el fin de semana del 15 al 17 de Febrero. En la estación de Scunthorpe, cualquier preocupación que pudieramos haber tenido respecto a reconocernos se disipó inmediatamente cuando nos dimos cuenta de que nosotros dos eramos los únicos esperando en el andén, y de los tres que se bajaron sólo uno tenía pinta de Camboyano...
From the very beginning it was obvious there was "chemistry" between us, the outgoing and open minded personality of Sophea's accounting greatly for it. First thing we did once home was to have dinner: Spanish omelette, Spanish "jamón serrano" (much better than Parma ham!), Manchego cheese, olives,... (we had already warned Sophea that with us he would get a BOGOF, ie, a mixture of experiences typical Spanish and Britihs... the best of both worlds!). To compensate for all this "Spanishness", we devoured a proper full english breakfast on Saturday morning.
Desde el primer momento "conectamos", a lo que ayudó mucho la personalidad abierta y extrovertida de Sophea. Lo primero que hicimos al llegar a casa fue cenar tortilla de patatas con jamón serrano, lomo, aceitunas, queso manchego... (ya le habíamos advertido que con nosotros iba a tener el 2 x 1, es decir, una mezcla de experiencias "typical Spanish and British"... lo "mejó" de lo "mejó"). Para compensar toda esta "españolidad", al día siguiente nos zampamos un buen desayuno inglés.
Sophea brough up with him the good weather. Saturday morning, with the bacon and the eggs still partying in our stomachs, we went for a tour of Corus, the Steelworks in Scunthorpe. It came out that, for seven years, he had worked in the commercial area for the Mitsubishi Group, with links to Nippon Steel. In the afternoon, a relaxing visit to the Health Suite at Scunthorpe's Leisure centre followed by... Party! Mandy, from HOST UK, was celebrating her 50th and prepared an extraordinary buffet at her place, which was bursting with guests (thanks again, Mandy and Mike!) We took this opportunity to introduce Sophea to Gareth and Yasmine, who came with "their" Russian, Cyril.
Sophea se trajo el buen tiempo. El sábado, con el huevo y el bacon aún de fiesta en nuestros estómagos, hicimos una visita a la acerería Corus en Scunthorpe. Resulta que Sophea trabajó siete años desde el area comercial para la corporación Mitsubishi y la Nippon Steel. Por la tarde, un poco de relajación en el mini-balneario del centro deportivo de Scunthorpe y por la noche... ¡Fiesta! Mandy, de HOST UK, celebraba su 50 cumpleaños, y preparó un extraordinario buffet en su casa, que estaba a reventar de invitados (¡Gracias de nuevo, Mandy y Mike!). Esto nos dió la oportunidad de presentarle a Gareth y su novia Yasmine, que venían con "su" estudiante ruso Cyril.
Next day, a cold but sunny Sunday, we met up again with Gareth and Co. at Hemswell Car Boot Sale, which was followed by a visit of Lincoln.
Al día siguiente, un domingo frío pero con sol, quedamos con Garey y Co. en el rastro de Hemswell , a lo que siguió una visita a Lincoln.
In Cambodia, Sohea works for the Centre for Social Development.(www.csdcambodia.org). He has come to the UK with a Chevening fellowship to study "What Democracy means" at the Centre for Studies in Security and Diplomacy, University of Birmingham. He got this scholarship after a fierce selection process which included interviews with embassadors; in the last stage, there were 100 candidates for 2 posts. Although the bulk of the course takes place in Birmingham, Sophea has also been visiting other institutions of European governance in London, Brussels,...
En Camboya, Sophea trabaja para el Centro para el Desarrollo Social (www.csdcambodia.org). En el Reino Unido, está con una beca estudiando "Lo que significa la democracia" en el Centro de Estudios en Seguridad y Diplomacia de la Universidad de Birmingham. Esta beca la obtuvo tras duras pruebas de selección que incluían entrevistas con embajadores y que en su última fase tenía 100 candidatos para 2 puestos. Aunque el núcleo principal del programa se desarrolla en Birmingham, también tiene estancias en Bruselas, Londres,... visitando las distintas instituciones que gobiernan Europa.
It goes without saying that the insight he gave us into life in Cambodia is invaluable. To be honest, we didn't stop all weeking querying him, to the point that we decided to give him a break during meals... mainly so he could chew!! We were surprised to find out the coincidences, to an extend, between what went on in Spain during the transition to Democracy in the 70's and what Cambodians are starting to experience now. It was also comforting to realize he understood the little Khmer ("cambodian" language) we are learning with a CD.
Ni que decir tiene que la visión interna que nos dió de la vida en Camboya es invaluable. La verdad es que no parabamos de hacerle preguntas, hasta el punto de que durante las comidas decidímos darle un respiro... ¡para que pudiera masticar, mas que nada! Nos sorprendió la cantidad de coincidencias, guardando las distancias, entre lo que se vivió en España durante los años de la transición y lo que los camboyanos están comenzando a vivir ahora. Por otro lado, nos agradó comprobar que entendía el Kher ("camboyano") que estamos aprendiendo con un CD.
To wrap it up, the experience was very gratifying and enriching. We will try to meet up with Sophea again before he leaves the UK, or in Cambodia later this summer (where he's very kindly offered to show us around, meet his wife, his three kids... and his ten - yes, ten- dogs!!) What remains is the feeling we have a good friend in him.
En fín, que la experiencia fue muy gratificante y enriquecedora. Intentaremos ver a Sophea de nuevo mientras aún está aquí, y sino, pues en Camboya (donde ya se ha ofrecido a hacernos de guía, conocer a su mujer, a sus 3 hijos... ¡y a sus diez, sí, diez, perros!). Lo que sí es cierto es que sentimos que hemos hecho un buen amigo.
