Last Saturday (May 10th) Elena and I woke up early, as we had to be at Appleby Frodingham Squash Club (AFSC) before 9:00am. Why? Well, another of our fund-raising events, of course! This time, a “24hr Squash Marathon”. But don't worry! It isn't "as bad" as it sounds! Basically, we booked 2 squash courts for 12 hours (9am- 9pm- this "technically" made it 24 hrs… bit cheeky, we know, ...) We then split the time into 15 minutes slots and asked people to book themselves and play for one or more slots at £2.00 each.
El sábado pasado (10 Mayo) nos levantamos temprano porque teníamos que estar en el Appleby Frodingham Squash Club (AFSC) antes de las 9:00am. ¿Y porqué? ¡Pues otro de nuestros eventos para recaudar dinero, por supuesto! En este caso, un “maratón de Squash de 24hr”. Pero tranquilos, no es tan “malo” como suena. Básicamente, teníamos reservadas dos pistas de Squash por doce horas (de 9:00am a 9:00pm- lo cual “técnicamente” se podía considerar como “24 horas”… sí, vale, cogido con alfileres, lo sabemos…) Luego, dividimos el tiempo en periodos de 15 minutos, y pedimos a la gente que jugara una o varias tandas y nos donara 2 libras por cada una.
As we got to the AFSC concern was looming in the horizon… would people remember to come? on time? how would we feel after 12 hours in the Club? (bored? exhausted but happy?...)
Al llegar al AFSC la verdad no las teníamos todas con nosotros… ¿se acordaría la gente de venir? ¿a su hora? ¿cómo nos encontraríamos tras estar 12 horas en el Club (¿aburridos? ¿exhaustos pero felices? ...)?
But we needn’t worry! From the very beginning participation was constant, and everyone donated very generously. Time passed in a flash, and we thoroughly enjoyed the day, which from the meteorological point of view was simply glorious (sunny, 25C, light breeze…) If we needed a bit of fresh air, all we had to do was to enjoy the outdoor atmosphere of a cricket game being played on our doorstep (but we are sorry to say that, even after 8 years in the UK, trying to understand this bit of the British culture remains an unfathomable mystery to our brains)
¡Pero no había razón para preocuparse! Desde el principio la participación fue continua y fluida, y todo el mundo donó muy generosamente. A nosotros se nos pasó el tiempo volando, y disfrutamos mucho del día, que además en cuanto a lo metereológico se refiere fue simplemente glorioso (soleado, 25C, con una ligera brisita…). Si necesitábamos un poquito de aire fresco, lo único que había que hacer era disfrutar del ambiente al aire libre de un partido de críquet que se estaba jugando a las puertas del Club (aunque sentimos decir que, incluso tras 8 años, intentar entender ese pedacito de la cultura británica sigue siendo un misterio insondable para nuestros cerebelos).
And so the day drew to an end without us realizing! The total amount raised is … £449!
¡Y el día tocó a su fín casi sin darnos cuenta! La cantidad recaudada es...¡las £449! (unos 630€)
Our most sincere gratitude to the AFSC Committee members, who not only facilitated the promotion and organization of the “marathon”, but also provided drinks on the day and donated some excellent sports bags as raffle prizes for our next event, the “Salsa Night”.
Nuestro más sincero agradecimiento a los miembros del Comité directivo del AFSC, que no sólo pusieron a nuestra disposición todos los medios necesarios para promocionar y organizar la “maratón”, sino que además durante el día proporcionaron bebidas y donaron unas estupendas bolsas de deporte para la rifa que llevaremos a cabo durante nuestro próximo evento, la “Salsa Night”.
And, of course, thanks muchly to everyone who, by either directly taking part in the event or through donations, have made this event a success; among them (in no particular order):
