SOME THINGS WE'VE LEARNT SINCE JUNE 27 / ALGUNAS COSAS QUE HEMOS APRENDIDO DESDE EL 27 JUNIO

· If you are restricted to 40 kg luggage (20kg per person) and carry 57kg, at the check-in youll be told you have 4kg overweight (awesome math skills!) and will be charged for 2kg. Which is very fine, until told that each kg will cost you... £46! (£92 in total)

· Si tu limite de equipaje es de 40kg (20kg por persona) y llevas 57kg, al facturar te dicen que llevas 4kg de sobrepeso (¡esas mates!) y que te tienen que cobrar 2kg. De lo cúal uno se siente muy satisfecho, hasta que le comunican que el kg extra se cotiza a... ¡60! (120 en total).

· The question "Window or aisle?" is a tricky one. If you answer "Window, please", youll end up sat in the middle aisle of the aircraft.

· La pregunta "¿Pasillo o ventanilla?" tiene truco. Si contestas "Ventanilla, por favor", acabaras sentado en el pasillo central del avión.

· At the beginning of your trip, the Russian air-hostesses at Heathrow will check your passport and admit that "Spain played better than us and deserves to be in the final"

· Al comienzo del viaje, las azafatas rusas de Heathrow mirarán tu pasaporte y admitirán que "España jugó mejor que nosotros y merece estar en la final".

· Once arrived in your destination, the Cambodian Customs officers will check your passport and invite you to watch the Eurocup final against Germany with them, in some obscure betting place (in Phnom Penh, at 2am... ehh... decline politely and leave...)

· Al llegar a tu destino, los aduaneros camboyanos mirarán tu pasaporte y te invitarán a que vayas a ver la final de la Eurocopa contra Alemania con ellos, en una dudosacasa de apuestas (en Phnom Penh, a las 2am... ehh... declina amablemente y ve largándote...)

· To eat just boiled noodles with chop-sticks in the aircraft while flying through turbulences could result in serious health issues (especially for those really sensible bits of your anatomy)

· Comer noodles recién hervidos con palillos en el avión en mitad de turbulencias puede resultar muy perjudicial para la salud (sobre todo de ciertas partes sensibles de tu anatomía).

· Your luggage enjoys spending some quality time in Hong Kongs airport and usually arrives a day after you.

· A tus maletas les encanta el aeropuerto de Hong Kong y por eso suelen llegar un día después que tú.

· When booking a room in any guesthouse in Phnom Penh, try to avoid the one just on top of the kitchen, no matter how nice it looks(the room, not the kitchen...). Unless, of course, you enjoy that sauna feeling while you sleep.

· Cuando te den una habitación en cualquier pensión de Phnom Penh, procura que no sea la que se encuentra directamente encima de la cocina, aunque sea preciosa (la habitación, no la cocina...). A no ser que, claro, disfrutes de esa sensación de sauna mientras duermes.

· From one of the breakfast menus in Phnom Penh: "English sausages (German quality)". No comments.

· De uno de los menús de desayuno en Phnom Penh: "Salchichas inglesas (calidad alemana)". Sin comentarios.

· There is a huge difference between "Fried rice with vegetables" and "Fried vegetables with rice".

· Hay una gran diferencia entre "Arroz frito con verduras" y "Verduras fritas con arroz".

· If you are going to spend a long time here, you definitively want to become a Toyota and/ or Hatari shareholder. All the cars (and most of the motorbikes) are Toyotas, but above all, all of the air fans are Hataris. At a rough estimate of 2fans per Cambodian, we are talking of about 30 million fans...

· Si vas a pasar una larga temporada aquí, definitivamente te conviene hacerte accionista de Toyota y / o Hatari. Todos los coches (y la mayoría de las motos) son Toyotas, pero sobre todo, todos los ventiladores son Hataris. Estimando que cada camboyano toca por lo menos a 2 ventiladores, nos salen unos 30 millones en total...

· There are no coins in Cambodia.

· En Camboya no hay monedas.

· Construction scaffoldings are made of bamboo cane.

· Los andamios de las construcciones son de caña de bambú.

· If you are at home, about to go to bed, and all of the sudden hear this sound similar to that of the squeezable yellow bath duck of you little nephew, youll know you have a big lizard (approx. 12in) living in your roof. They are completely harmless, and if they get too loud you should just emphatically shout "shut the f... up!!". It really works. Weve called ours Norberto. He usually bids us goodbye when we leave the house in the morning.

· Cuando por la noche estés en casa preparándote para ir a la cama y de repente oigas un ruido parecido al que hace el patito de baño amarillo de tu sobrinito sabrás que en tu tejado vive un lagarto pequeño (o una lagartija gigante, según se mire: de unos 30cm de longitud). Son totalmente inofensivos, y si se ponen muy pesados basta con gritarles (en tono enérgico) "¡que te calles, c...!". Y oye, funciona. Al nuestro le hemos bautizado Norberto. Suele asomar la cabecita para despedirnos por las mañanas.

· You shouldn't take a photo with just 3 people in it. Any other number is fine. The why, we are still trying to figure out. Watch this space.

· No se deben hacer fotos de sólo 3 personas. Cualquier otro número vale. Todavía estamos intentando averiguar el porque. Manténganse en sintonía.

· In Kratie "to go for a walk"= 5 hr on your push-bike. But very much worth it, through incredible scenery including rice fields, lakes, small wooden and thatch roofed houses...and the kindest people ever, stopping you with an invite to their homes and offering you all sorts of fruits.

· En Kratie, "dar un paseo"= 5 hr en bici. Eso sí, por increíbles paisajes con arrozales, lagos, casitas de madera con techos de paja...y la gente mas amable del mundo, parándote para invitarte a sus casas y ofreciéndote todo tipo de frutas.

· Todos los cuartos de baño son water-bidé-ducha-todo-en-uno.

· All the bathrooms are sink-toiletseat-shower-all-inclusive.

· The water pressure device close to the shower is not intended for a body massage, but for more mundane hygienic needs (the clues being the total absence of toilet paper and the realization that it is even closer to the toilet seat, rather than the shower)

· El dispositivo con chorro a presión cercano a cada ducha no es para darse masajes por el cuerpo, precisamente, sino para quehaceres sanitarios más mundanos (las pistas son la total ausencia de papel higiénico y la el darse cuenta de que además de estar al lado de la ducha, está aún mas cercano al retrete)

· When it chucks it down here in Kratie the probability of a blackout is a 110%.

· Cuando cae la del pulpo aquí en Kratie, las probabilidades de que haya un apagón son del 110%.

· The concept of "lying in" is absolutely alien over here, even during weekends. You will either get a phone call from your Khmer friend at 6:30am confirming the walk at 8:00am is still on, or a guy with the smallest bike and the biggest loudspeaker ever will blast your ears with electoral propaganda. Failing all this, the bastard rooster will wake you up instead with British punctuality.

· El concepto de "quedarse un poquito más en la cama por la mañana" es algo desconocido por estos lares, incluso durante el finde. Si tu amigo Camboyano no te llama a las 6:30 para confirmar el paseo de las 8:00, será un tipo con la moto mas pequeña y el altavoz mas grande nunca jamás vistos el que te reventará los oídos con propaganda electoral. En cualquier caso, si todo esto falla, ya se encargará el gallo cabrón de despertarte con puntualidad británica.

· Size 11 shoes in Cambodia = size 8 in UK. And that goes also for anything else: knickers, bras, underpants, trousers. .. Having said that, a tailor made shirt at the market, £4.

· Talla 46 de zapatos en Cambodia = talla 42 en España. Y así, aplíquese para todo: bragas, sujetadores, calzoncillos, pantalones... Eso sí, que te hagan una camisa a medida los sastres del mercado, 6.

· With a bit of imagination, almost anything can be carried on a scooter.

· Con un poco de imaginación, casi todo se puede transportar en un scooter.

· While cycle riding anywhere youll hear several "hello´s" from children leaning out of their homes windows / doors. If you respond, you will be rewarded with the most sincere of smiles (and a whole new bunch of even more enthusiastic "hello's"!)

· Al pasear en bici por cualquier lugar escucharás varios "hello's" de niños asomados a las ventanas o puertas de sus casas. And there we were, 2:18am Phnom Penh time, watching it live from a Thai broadcast... (thanks Sophea and family!)
We are both well, still recovering from the trip and the intense heat (will we ever?...). Will write more when we settle down in Kratie, travelling there tomorrow.

OFF WE GO!! - ¡¡VAMOS QUE NOS VAMOS!!

Our first of the 128 malaria tablets! / ¡La primera de nuestras 128 pastillas contra la malaria!

Well, the moment of truth has finally arrived... In a few hours, Elena and I will be airborne, full of expectations of what lies ahead.

This wants to be just a few lines to thank you all for your support (economic and most of all, moral!) and friendship. Rest assured that we will take care of ourselves and behave safely.

Will try to write a new posting asap, but you'll understand it might take a while to settle down over there. So... watch this space!

Bueno, el momento de la verdad ha llegado... en unas pocas horas, Elena y yo estaremos en el aire, llenos de ilusiones sobre lo que nos aguarda.

Esto son tan sólo un par de liñícas para daros a todos las gracias por vuestro apoyo (económico, pero sobre todo ¡¡moral!!) y amistad.

Intentaremos escribir un artículo en cuanto podamos, pero comprendereis que nos puede llevar un ratico asentarnos allí. Assínn que... ¡al loro!

LATEST UPDATE ON SALSA CLASSES IN SCUNTHORPE (sólo en Inglés)

Dear all

Apologies for taking a while to get in touch with you, but here's what I have planned to begin with ...

I will run 3 salsa taster classes over the summer at Brumby Hall on the following dates:

Wednesday 9th July
Wednesday 23rd July
Wednesday 6th August

These classes will cost £5 per person per class and will begin with thevery basic salsa timing and steps and progress at a pace to suit those whoattend. I intend to begin at 18:30 and finish at 20:00 (1 hr of class andhalf an hour to practice), although this can be adjusted if necessary. If these classes go well and there are enough people who would like to continue with regular classes in Scunthorpe I will set up either a weekly orfortnightly class from September.

Please could you let me know if you intend to come along (07813813244 or jennie.davies@gmail.com) to any or all of these classes so I can get a feel for the numbers to expect. I welcome any suggestions or comments you may have. Also, feel free to forward this email to anyone you think may be interested.

P.S. Apologies to those of you that requested Monday night classes - trying to get a venue with a decent floor on a Monday evening proved a little difficult! 31/05/08: SALSA DANCING! - ¡BAILANDO SALSA!

After a month and a half preparing the event, finally the day of our Salsa Night arrived. First things first: the venue needed decorating, so at 12:30 we headed towards the Brumby Hall full of flags and balloons. Initially we thought it could be done in an hour or so... but it wasn't before 16:00 that we actually went back home. Thank God Alberto and Naiara were there to lend us a hand, otherwise...


Después de un mes y medio preparando el evento, al fin llegó el día de nuestra Salsa Night. Lo primero que había que hacer es decorar el local, así que a las 12:30 nos fuimos cardaditos de banderitas y globos hacia el Brumby Hall. Al principio pensamos que lo haríamos en una horita o así… pero ¡no fue hasta las 16:00 que nos fuimos a casa! Menos mal que Alberto y Naiara estuvieron allí para echarnos una mano, que sino…


So after a quick shower and a bit to eat, back to the Brumby Hall at 18:15. Awaiting there were Lawrence & Nacho, who kindly helped us bringing up DJ Dave's equipment. Shortly after that Amaris and Jennie, our Salsa instructors, arrived. And first test of the night: checking that the wireless headset would work properly... which it did, loud and clear! Uff, first sigh of relief...

En fin, que tras una duchita rápida y bocaíto pá comer, de vuelta al Brumby Hall a las 18:15. Ya nos esperaban Nacho y Lawrence para ayudarnos a subir el equipo de Dave, nuestro DJ. Al poco llegaron Amaris y Jennie, las monitoras de Salsa. Primer test de la noche: comprobar que el micrófono inalámbrico funcionaba correctamente… ¡y lo hizo, alto y claro! Uff, primer suspiro de alivio…

The venue's 250 maximum capacity had sold quickly days before the event, and even so we still got phonecalls asking for tickets 5 minutes prior to opening the doors. With British punctuality, as the clock struck 19:30, people started to arrive, most of them from Scunthorpe and surrounding areas, but also from Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Hull... there was someone from York with one of our leaflets! (we are still trying to figure out how it got there). Everyone received at the door a Hawaiian lei of colour of their choosing. Lawrence and Nacho did a great job as our doormen, checking on tickets, thanks guys! And so the time arrived for me to step on the stage to "give the go ahead" for the evening and introduce our Salsa instructors. As Amaris took control, the dancing floor was still deserted. Ups, what if nobody wanted to give it a go? No need to worry, though: as soon as Amaris announced "c'mon, whoever wants to learn, get on the dance floor!", fuuuuussssh, up they went at once, and in less than 5 sec there was hardly any space available... impressive, really!! Uff, second sigh of relief...

Los 250 tickets de capacidad máxima se habían agotado días antes, y aún así seguíamos recibiendo peticiones hasta 5 minutos antes de abrir las puertas. Con puntualidad británica, a las 19:30 empezó a llegar la gente, la mayoría de Scunthorpe y alrededores, pero también de Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Hull,… hasta alguien de York, al que todavía no sabemos cómo le había llegado uno de nuestros panfletos… A cada uno se le recibía con un “collar hawaiano”del color que prefiriera. Lawrence y Nacho hicieron un extraordinario trabajo como porteros, controlando los tickets a la entrada ¡gracias!. Y llegó la hora del comienzo “oficial”. Así que, ni corto ni perezoso, subí al escenario a dar el “pistoletazo de salida” y presentar a nuestras monitoras. En el momento en que Amaris tomó el mando, la pista de baile estaba desierta. Uy uy uy… ¿y si nadie se atrevía? Hasta que Amaris dio el grito de guerra “venga, el que quiera aprender, ¡a la pista!” y, fuuuuushhhh, una marabunta de gente literalmente llenó la pista en 5 segundos… ¡impresionante! Uff, segundo suspiro de alivio…

And so we had a fun 40 minutes of "introduction to salsa", with Amaris leading on the stage and Jennie supporting her on the dance floor. After this, time for well earned food, the very exotic... ehh...pie & peas... Also time for more experienced dancers to show their skills on the dance floor. Awesome, really!

Y así transcurrieron 40 divertidos minutos de "introducción a la Salsa", con Amaris liderando desde el escenario y Jennie ayudándola en la pista de baile. Tras esta primera sesión, llegó la hora de un bien merecido y super exótico piscolabis, esto... pastel de carne con guisantes... Fue entonces también cuando muchos bailarines y bailarinas “expertos” aprovecharon para demostrar sus habilidades sobre el parqué. ¡Había nivel, sí Señor!

At 22:00 Amaris was back on stage for the "Introduction to Merengue" taster session, which was also very well attended. In the meantime, Gareth and Yaz were giving us a hand with the raffle tickets that themselves and Adriana had helped us to sell during the night. A night that was getting hotter and hotter by the minute, but hey, "hot" and "Salsa" always go hand in hand...

A las 22:00 ya teníamos de nuevo a Amaris sobre el escenario para la sesión de “Introducción al Merengue”, que también tuvo una gran participación. Mientras tanto, Gareth y Yaz nos echaban una mano con los tickets de rifa que ellos mismos, junto con Adriana, nos habían ayudado a vender durante la noche. Una noche en la que, a medida que transcurría, el calor se hacía mas y mas evidente, pero, hey, “caliente” y “Salsa” ¡han de ir siempre de la mano!…

Tras el merengue, la rifa, para la cual teníamos 3 premios (el de los “artilugios”, el “exótico” y el “alcohólico”: haz clic aquí para mas info) y en el escenario, Nora, nuestra entrañable amiga de Epworth, fue la mano inocente que eligió a los ganadores.

And so, without even realizing, the night drew to and end.... Uff (third, and most hard-felt, sigh of relief). Everything had gone exactly as planned.

Y así, en un pispas, la fiesta llegó a su fín… Uff (tercer, y mas sentido, suspiro de alivio). Todo había salido a la perfección.
